English Medium Education: How much does it Matter?

Image
This is like the question called a Hobson's choice where the answer Yes or No would both be equally correct. Language is a means to an end and since everything is increasingly transactional most of us think that English medium education is of paramount importance. As all higher education in India, UK , USA and older colonized nations is in English, so if one were to have material progress one had to get an English education. A generation ago rural India had a paucity of schools and in this English medium schools were often non existent. In the olden days the literature  available in local languages was far less than English and the accident of India being colonized by Great Britain led to English dominance. Currying favour with the ruling class made knowledge of English a necessity rather than a matter of choice.  India is in this respect is a very unique country with a diversity in terms of nature and culture far greater than most other nations of the world.   This is a debate which really fascinates me and is keeping me quite confused and perplexed. Integrity, honesty, transparency are qualities worthy of emulation and yet most of us claim that there should be right to Privacy especially in view of the assault that we face from the use of the data generated by our activities on social media. Did these require any privacy? The answer is a resounding no as there was nothing to hide and everything to learn and know. As men procreated and their numbers increased they realised that for ...

Medical Friendships transcend borders? Reunions WhatApp or Real??

Today I seek to write about a subject which has been an enigma for me. Medical College friendships is my blog subject.I think our evolution in life from childhood, adolescence and adulthood is an expansion of one's horizons from a small relatively stable circle of similar persons to a larger and diverse circle. While we have school and college friends and the circle is sought to be preserved through alumni circles and such organizations, they have certainly not lasted. This may be on account of us living insular protected lives under the gaze of parents who tended to ensure that we sought the company of literally people like us and if there was diversity it was stifled by selection bias as most schools were chosen by our parents and collated to ensure that exposure to unwanted and perceived harmful influences was avoided. If chance led us to a different personality or type, it was described as an aberration and there was a kind of adult intervention to nip in the bud any differen...
